Over 350 years of tradition comes alive once again in this beautiful Alpine village
During the 30 Year’s War, which was fought in the first half of the 17th century, the “Black Death” raged throughout southern Germany, killing many thousands of people. In 1632, the “Black Death” came to Oberammergau. By 1633, almost every family in the village had suffered a death caused by this plague. In their despair, the people of Oberammergau swore an oath that every ten years they would perform the “Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ”. And so they did. On Whitsunday 1634, the Passion Play was performed for the first time on a stage which had been erected in the cemetery over the fresh graves of the plague victims.
The people of Oberammergau have fulfilled their pledge ever since.
In 2010, the Passion Play will be performed for the 41st time. More than 2000 villagers, almost half of Oberammergau's population, including adults, the elderly and children, will, with great dedication, reenact the story of Jesus of Nazareth. The five hour play will be performed in two parts on the large open-air stage of the 4,800 seat Passion Play Theatre for five days each week from mid-May to the beginning of October.
