In mid-May 1981, I began a solo backpacking odyssey across Europe that lasted 10 weeks. The first few weeks were confusing, frustrating and lonely. In Trier, Germany, my luck changed for the better when I met up with two Canadians traveling in a VW station wagon they had recently purchased in Amsterdam. They had the room so they invited me along for the ride. For the next six weeks, I had the time of my life and promptly fell in love with traveling in Europe.
The adventures have continued right through to the present time and I have memories that will last me for a lifetime. They include; playing golf at St. Andrews in Scotland, attending the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, celebrating the 1992 Luzern Winter Carnival, riding the Venice-Simplon Orient Express train, cruising all the major river systems of central Europe, and playing roulette at the Casino in Monte Carlo, just to name a few. Europe is a wonderland of different cultures, cuisine, religions, cities, villages, mountains, rivers and peoples. For those who enjoy and relish these differences, Europe is out there waiting for you.
